~ Missions Fest 2012 will be January 27-29, 2012 in Vancouver.

~ The Sharing Way Annual Project  focuses this year on “Small Business. Big Change.”  Eighty percent of people in the world have no access to credit-mostly people in developing countries who would do almost anything to work their way out of poverty and hunger.  They don’t want handouts; they simply want to be able to provide for their families.  They’re hardworking and industrious, and many have entrepreneurial instincts, but there are no jobs available and they don’t have the resources to start a small business.  That’s where microcredit comes in.  This year, funds raised for the Sharing Way Annual Project will be used to help provide that microcredit.  Watch for more information..

~ PREPARING THE WAY: A 4-session Online Advent Devotional Series Available Nov. 21st from Carey Theological College. The cost is only $5.00. Check out the Carey website.

~ Financial Update: Our giving is approximately $1000 behind last year. Please consider if you can help respond to this need.

~ Time Change: The time change this year is the first weekend in November. The clocks can be turned back one hour on Saturday night, November 5th.

Our 14th annual event at the Empress Hotel in support of the Youth Empowerment Society for local at-risk youth. ~ Congratulations to Jason and Heidi who welcomed Eliana Heather Marie into their family (with Jesse) on Tuesday, October 11th. Eliana was born at 6:00 a.m. and weighed in at 6 lbs., 8 oz.

~ The Fall Supper will be held on Saturday, October 22nd at 5:30 p.m. This will be a planned potluck and a sign up sheet will be available next Sunday. This is a good event to invite friends and family. A short program will follow the meal.

~ Our next congregational meeting will be Thursday October 27, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. At this meeting, some important constitutional matters will be discussed.

~ The Trelawny Male Choir from Cornwall UK will be doing a concert tour of Western Canada and will be in Victoria at Central Baptist Church, 833 Pandora Ave. on Friday, September 30th at 7:00 p.m. The Choir consists of 80 members and they perform “a wide range of gospel and spiritual numbers.” See the Bulletin Board for more information including about obtaining tickets.

~ The hospital chaplains are offering a training course for acute care hospital spiritual care volunteers. See the bulletin board for more info.

~ Ministering Cross-culturally in our urban World conference. This conference runs Friday, 7-9 p.m., September 30th and Saturday, 9-5 p.m., October 1st.

~ On Monday, September 12, 2011 at 7 p.m., a few people are needed to help sanitize the toys in the nursery. If you would be willing to help with this, please talk to Lynn Rancourt.

~ The South Island Centre for Counselling and Training is offering some stimulating courses and weekend seminars this Fall. One of the courses is an eight week art therapy group for those experiencing transition or loss. Another course is about Mid-Life directions. See the bulletin board for more information.

~ Matt and Yarrow Fox express a warm thank you to all those who contributed to the shower gift for Niko. Yarrow wrote, “Our little family was deeply touched by the generous monetary gift that the Elk Lake congregation collected to celebrate Niko’s Birth – we used the gift to purchase our cloth diapers. Although we have not called Victoria home for the past 4 years, Elk Lake has remained our dear church family and we love worshiping together whenever we are in Victoria.

~ From “Getting on with Life” – Peter Day. “Rebuilders”, the divorce recovery program, is in it’s 17th year, offers support and encouragement to individuals who are working through a couple breakup. The program will be held on Tuesday evenings atLambrick Park Church from September 13 to November 22. See the Literature Table for brochures.

Copies of this letter are available on the guest book table and the bulletin board near the single door.

~ If you would like to make a donation to the famine in Somalia, you may designate money on your ELB giving envelope – Sharing Way – Somalia. The Sharing Way works with its partners in the region to provide food and shelter to those who need it.

~ Elk Lake Baptist Church has received a letter from Statistics Canada, asking our membership to please fill out and return the National Household Survey (NHS). One in three households will receive this more comprehensive census questionnaire. Question 22 addresses the religion or denomination of each person. The NHS will provide valuable information that will be used to make decisions about community social programs.

~ The Church Fellowship Hall and kitchen will be in use on Saturday, August 13th, for the afternoon and evening.
